Being an affiliate or associate marketer can be a tough enterprise.  There is much more to learn than most of us anticipated when we first started.  The learning curve is too steep for some, and many simply drop out.

Article Syndication and Mini-Site SEO

Many companies opt for a mini-site to promote a particular service or product within its business niche.  If your business has made that decision and if it hopes to achieve value from the site for a long period of time, you need to concentrate almost all of your search engine optimization (SEO) labor on getting external links, because choosing a mini-site means giving up the built-in advantages of the larger sites with a large number of internal links pointing toward the most important pages.

You should use all available opportunities to obtain high quality external links, including directory listing, hiring a SEO consulting firm and using social media for its viral features.  However, I want to concentrate your attention toward one of the most important of the external link building alternatives, article syndication. 

There are several ways in which article marketing can improve your SEO.  The first is that the links will be found by the search robots on a variety of websites.  Assuming that those websites are located on unique IP addresses, this is very helpful because of the algorithms that the search engines use to determine their results listings.  Next, with content syndication, unlike some other methods of getting external links, you get to decide the exact anchor (linking) text for each link.  Third, article marketing is relatively inexpensive and easy when compared to some of the other ways of obtaining quality links.  The ease of the process can be largely attributed to the introduction of specific software to facilitate article marketing.

I write and spin about fifteeen article each week so that I really end up with the equivalent of hundreds of unique articles that I distribute to several article directories (for further distribution) or distribute directly to individual websites.  I am able to reach that level of productivity because of two essential memberships that I maintain.

One of the sites of which I am a member provides a free article spinner, available to anyone.  You may also register to use an automated submission service that is linked to the spinner.  It sends a unique version of your article to up to hundreds of different article directories.  When you first register to use the always free spinner, you can get a free trial offer to use the distribution part of the software.  There is a membership fee associated with the distribution system after the trial period ends.

My other membership is to a service that also has a built-in article spinner, but this system require membership to use the entire system rather that breaking the system into parts.  The important difference with this system is that, rather than distributing unique versions of the article to directories, those article are spun and the distributed directly to websites

Both approaches have their advantages, which is the reason that I maintain memberships in both.  Consequently, a combination of the two is what I would recommend for use in the SEO efforts for your mini-sites, with an added benefit of almost immediately increasing traffic.

Part of My Affiliate Marketing Headache Is Fixed

There are lots of good sources that can tell you a great deal about how to establish an affiliate marketing business.  Unfortunately, it is much harder to find someone to do the actual difficult work for you.  Well, I haven’t quite solved that problem for you, but I have discovered what I think is the next best thing.

I sell my own digital and physical products, but a sizeable chunk of my income still comes from affiliate marketing, where I began.  I use websites and blogs for all of my online business activities.  I rely quite heavily on search engine optimization (SEO) to secure traffic, but that is a long term strategy.  In some cases, I have used PPC for affiliate products with success, but more often I am lucky to break even. 

Consequently, like many in affiliate marketing, increasing traffic at a reasonable cost is one of my most vexing challenges.  It is particularly difficult for those times when I discover a new affiliate product but for which none of my sites are well optimized.  How do I get the visitors to the vendor’s site with my embedded affiliate link?

My approach to directing traffic to the vendor’s site is just like many other affiliate marketers, I take them first to my own site, where I ply my skills of subtle persuasion.  Then I just hope that I have been sufficiently convincing to get them to click the link that directs them to the vendor’s site so that I have some small chance of earning my commission.  I have always wished that I could cut out part of the middle of that process.

I use content syndication for all of my sites.  I employ that strategy primarily for its SEO value but also for the direct visitors that are sent my way.  There are two major problems with the traditional approach to article marketing, especially for the affiliate marketer.  The first of those problems is that the top tier directories that publish and distribute articles do not allow links within the body of the article, contextual linking.  Typically, the links are isolated below the article itself in a sort of no man’s land called the author’s box or the resource box.  Second, the major article directories do not allow affiliate links or even links to redirected pages or domains.

Finally, there is an article distribution service that solves those two problems and allows direct linking using our affiliate links which can be placed contextually within the article.  It’s called My Article Network–and, yes, once you are a member, you can join its affiliate program.

My Article Network is like a consortium for article marketers and content publishers.  (That link will let you know what I have to say about it on one of my sites.)  It’s another of those Callen projects that most of us who hang around online business for any period of time have come to know so well.

Use The Resource Box Properly
This will lead you back to carefully reading and knowing the publication guidelines. Commonly, article directories accepts three. Don’t pass up the opportunity by using only one. Whilst, there are others that accept only one, so you may as well follow their rules and try not to trick them by forcing on with three.

Make It Relevant
You can’t make a square peg go in a round hole. This isn’t rocket surgery . . . or is it rocket science? Anyway, you can’t use a PLR article on space travel and then try using it to get traffic headed to a medical site. Well, you can try.
