I spent a great deal of my time working on search engine optimization (SEO) for my various websites and blogs.  An online business has two options for tackling the necessary, continuing task of improving SEO.  One of those is to handle your optimization efforts in-house, while the other is to hire a consulting firm to assist you in the project.  I have three primary concerns about such companies.  Many of the consultants are not well informed about legitimate research about how the search engine algorithms determine rankings.  Some of them seem to prefer to respond to the latest rumor rather than relying upon solid empirical data; perhaps they just lack the necessary analytical skills.  Some of the simply disguise themselves as experts, and then go out and purchase links from link farms.  Such links can sometimes have very short term success, but eventually the linking strategies are made useless by sophisticated search engine algorithms that can uncover such schemes and cause your site to drop back farther in the search results than it was before you hired the self-proclaimed masters.  My third concern about these companies is that they are usually very expensive for the limited value that you actually might achieve.

If you read the first paragraph of this article, you know my recommendation:  Do it yourself, unless you can afford the extremely high prices of someone like a Brad Fallon or a Leslie Rohde.

If you’re going to follow my informed recommendation, you need some help in the form of basic search engine optimization education and good, well engineered software to help you gather and analyze the immense amount of data required to indicate potential areas of improvement and to track the results of the strategies that you implement.  I have a review of the important SEO software that is available at one of my sites.

I have long been a long term supporter of SEO Elite (see sales page).  This Callen designed program has been a leader in SEO software for years.  Until now, I have always endorsed it without any reservations.  However, I know that the company plans to release a new version of SEO Elite in the near future, so I hesitate giving it my full endorsement right now, unless you can find out if those of us who own the original will be able to upgrade SEO Elite 2.0 at a reduced rate or unless you decide to by another Callen miracle solution, Keyword Elite, because you can buy both at the same time for a substantial discount.  The combined price is a steal!

The only other comparable SEO software package is guru Leslie Rohde’s Optilink (you’ll land on the sales page).  Rohde is the genius who makes all the rest of us seem like nothing more than silly pretenders to the SEO throne.  Rohde taught me much of what I know about search engine optimization.  Pardon the lack of modesty…I know an immense amount about SEO.

If your business can afford the expense, I urge you to buy both software options–and use them both (as well as the amazing Keyword Elite).  But if you are in a financial pinch and want to begin with just one of the two, for the time being I am going to deviate from my usual recommendation and endorse Optilink.

Both SEO Elite and Optilink are comparably priced at just under $200 each, which is a bargain.  If your cash flow problem is temporarily significant, Rohde’s company offers a much less sophisticated program called Optispider that is only around half the price of the better Optilink.  If you really must scale back to that level, you might also consider the similarly priced ($100) Traffic Travis, by Mark Ling.  I describe each of those alternatives in my lengthy review (see the link in the first paragraph).

I am a frequent user of both SEO Elite and Optilink, and I believe that they compliment each other marvelously.  They are tremendous time savers in both gathering the data and in helping make sense of it all.

Blogging has been around for quite a few years now and its only been recently that many are thinking if it’s possible to make money blogging. In the beginning blogging was just for fun and passion. However when well written and interesting blogs began to get lots of traffic bloggers begun posting ads which most often began to bring in good income for the blogger.

Today, blogging has become a good source of income for many people. However just starting a blog is not a guarantee that you will make money online, since there are probably billions of blogs out there that your blog is essentially competing against. Purchasing a catchy domain is just a small part of the whole puzzle. There are, however, a few things you can do to make your blog more noticeable and attract more people.  When people start noticing your blog and visiting it regularly, that’s when you can start making some money off your blogging efforts.

You need to inform search engines and blogging directories that your blog is live. You do this by submitting the URL of your blog to various search engines and online directories. This will eventually ensure that when someone searches with the keywords you are using your blog will pop-up, however this is easier said than done.You will also need to actively participate on other blogs by posting your personal opinion in form of comments. This will get many people to your blog from other blogs. You will however need to say something relevant to the subject or your comments might never be allowed on the page. This will also build credibility for you.

Try to also become active on forums where the niche you are targeting is discussed. The more active you are, the better. I also advise against placing ads on your blog when you first start it — a good time to place ads is when you are getting around 3000 hits a day. This will also ensure that you start making money when people click on those ads, especially if those are PPC ads such as those posted by Google.

When making a blog post make sure that you put up a relevant picture along with the post, especially if you plan to sell products within your blog. This should help people understand your posts and products further. You can also include a form that enables people to send you a message so that they can get in touch with you if they want to do business with you.

You an also collaborate with other blogs and websites as well as trade links with them. This is an excellent way to increase traffic to your website. When blogging it pays to think beyond the boundaries of your box.  Think of fresh ideas that you can use for business, and you will soon see financial rewards if you work hard enough.
